Johnson is best recognized for his New York Times bestseller, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City, which served as the inspiration for the HBO TV series starring Steve Buscemi. The follow-up to Boardwalk Empire is The Northside: African Americans and The Creation of Atlantic City.
Johnson is currently working on his next book, centered on Clarence Darrow and his wife Ruby.
Nelson C. Johnson (born 1948) practiced law privately for 31 years before becoming a New Jersey Superior Court Judge. A lifelong resident of Hammonton, New Jersey, he lives there with his wife of over 40 years, Johanna R. Johnson, Ed.D., a retired school administrator. Nelson and Johanna have three adult children: Sarah Beth (married to Colin; both are attorneys); Ethan Wesley (married to Alisa), an FBI Special Agent; and Emily Jane (married to Jack), a fashion buyer. They are also proud grandparents to three grandchildren: Asher, Ava, and Sloane.
