Adam Herz is a screenwriter and producer renowned for creating the American Pie film series. He penned the original screenplay for American Pie, which became a global success and a cultural phenomenon. Herz went on to write and produce the sequels American Pie 2 and American Wedding, and served as a producer on the fourth theatrical installment, American Reunion. The franchise has earned nearly a billion dollars at the box office, with additional revenue far exceeding that amount.
Raised in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, Herz attended high school there, later drawing inspiration from it for the fictional "East Great Falls High." After graduating from the University of Michigan, he relocated to Los Angeles. While working various production assistant roles, Herz wrote his first spec script. Initially titled Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy That Can Be Made For Under Ten Million Dollars, the script sold to studios, and less than a year later, the film was completed and released as American Pie.
Herz established the production company Terra Firma Films, which held a first-look deal with Universal Studios for many years. Through Terra Firma, he developed and produced numerous projects across Hollywood. He also launched the Emerging Writers Program under Terra Firma, designed to help young, undiscovered writers hone their skills and break into the film industry.
Most recently, Herz created, wrote, and executive produced the half-hour comedy series Best Intentions, intended to succeed Pop Network's critically acclaimed Schitt's Creek. Despite a pilot that set testing records and a full season poised to begin filming, Viacom, Pop's parent company, ordered the cancellation of all scripted programming. Shortly after, the onset of COVID-19 lockdowns combined with this decision to halt the show and impact the livelihoods of hundreds involved.
