From Antarctica to the tropical Pacific, Paul Atkins, ASC has captured the world's wildlife and cultures for National Geographic, Disney, and the BBC, contributing to acclaimed series like PLANET EARTH, as well as IMAX productions and feature films. His work in cinematography and directing has garnered numerous awards, including Emmys, British Academy Awards, and a prestigious Telluride Film Festival Tribute.
Paul's deep connection to the ocean led him to Hawaii in 1974, where he pursued a Ph.D. in marine biology at the University of Hawaii and began his career as an underwater and wildlife cinematographer.
Together with his wife and producing partner, Grace Atkins, Paul created groundbreaking documentaries that challenged conventional beliefs and promoted environmental conservation. Their projects include the Emmy-winning HAWAII: STRANGERS IN PARADISE (Nat Geo/BBC), GREAT WHITE SHARK (BBC/Nat Geo), and DOLPHINS: THE WILD SIDE (Nat Geo). Paul served as director of photography on Jean-Michel Cousteau's VOYAGE TO KURE, a film instrumental in convincing President George W. Bush to designate the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a National Monument in 2006. More recently, he contributed to Disneynature's DOLPHIN REEF and Nat Geo's AMERICA'S NATIONAL PARKS.
Paul’s narrative filmmaking encompasses numerous commercials, television series, and feature films. He has collaborated with renowned directors such as Peter Weir on MASTER AND COMMANDER, Alejandro Inarritu on THE REVENANT, and Terrence Malick on THE TREE OF LIFE and other projects. During a 40-day voyage around Cape Horn, he filmed for MASTER AND COMMANDER, which earned the 2004 Academy Award for cinematography by Russell Boyd, ASC. His second unit work on THE TREE OF LIFE helped secure an Oscar nomination for cinematography, and he has continued to collaborate with Malick on TO THE WONDER, KNIGHT OF CUPS, and as director of photography on the IMAX documentary THE VOYAGE OF TIME, exploring the evolution of the universe.
