Born in New York City, Jesus is the third of four children in a Puerto Rican family and was raised on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
From a young age, Jesus had a passion for performing; he was both a visual artist and a musician. He earned a full scholarship to the prestigious Franklin School on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where he excelled as an Honor Roll student and basketball All-Star.
At Cornell University, Mr. Ruiz supported himself by working as a dancing DJ through his own production entertainment company, as a newscaster, an on-air radio personality, and a local TV show host. After playing professional basketball for two summers in Puerto Rico, his internship at WCBS-TV in New York City in the summer of 1979, focusing on the growing Hispanic market, helped shape his future career goals.
Two weeks after graduating from Cornell, he started as a production assistant at WPIX-TV in New York City, and a year later signed his first modeling contract. Due to limited roles for Latinos at the time, Jesus pursued a successful career as a licensed investment banker. As opportunities for Latino talent expanded, he returned to acting, booking print campaigns, commercials, and industrial projects for clients including AutoZone, Verizon, Pfizer, GMC, and IBM.
His television credits include Third Watch, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Conviction, the ABC pilot 20 Questions, and soap operas One Life to Live, As the World Turns, with over twenty appearances on All My Children.
His film work features The Inside Man, Freedom Land, The Producers, The Brave One, and upcoming releases The Singer, Elise, and TIC.
Jesus has also guest-starred and co-starred on Days of Our Lives, Without a Trace, Dollhouse, CSI: Miami, The Event, The Exes, Saving Grace, NCIS: Los Angeles, Jane the Virgin, Bosch, Get Shorty, Lethal Weapon, Speechless, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and holds a recurring role on the TNT crime drama S.W.A.T. and All Rise.
He has a starring role in the upcoming series Cocaine Sisters.
Mr. Ruiz currently resides in Los Angeles.
