Actor Tad Jones was born abroad at the US Army Hospital in Bad Connstatt, Germany. He is recognized for his roles in Manhattan (2014), The Lone Ranger (2013), and Persecuted (2014). His older twin sisters, younger brother (born on his first birthday), and younger brother and sister twins were also born on Army bases. After graduating from high school in Bethel, Vermont, Tad spent three seasons in Antarctica as a member of the Navy's VXE-6 Antarctic Para-Rescue Team. VXE-6 was contracted by the National Science Foundation as the air wing supporting international Antarctic research during "Operation Deepfreeze." During this period, he became an Antarctic Survival Instructor and was the seventh person to skydive at the South Pole on January 19, 1977.
Following his Antarctic service, he studied acting at Santa Barbara City College and appeared in college and community productions in Santa Barbara. In 1980, he moved to New York to attend The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Less than a month after completing his training there, his first Actor's Equity show was a St. Louis production of "Tribute," where he performed opposite Ken Howard, former president of SAG/AFTRA. Shortly thereafter, Tad obtained his SAG and AFTRA membership cards, landing principal roles in network television commercials and daytime TV. He spent three years as a member of the off-Broadway Mirror Repertory Company in New York City, acting alongside Geraldine Page, F. Murray Abraham, Michael Moriarty, Tovah Feldshuh, Steven Weber, Jim Rebhorn, Victor Slezak, and others.
In the early 1990s, Tad co-founded Aunahil, LLC, a production company through which he produced, wrote, and directed over 100 live theatrical and educational events for nonprofit organizations. These were presented at venues nationwide, including Constitution Hall for The White House, The Kennedy Center Opera House, Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, Orchestra Hall Chicago, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art.
In 2006, Tad completed an 1,100-mile backpack trek with Miles Spencer from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Damascus, Syria, retracing T.E. Lawrence’s path along the Hejaz as described in "Seven Pillars of Wisdom." He has served on the board of "Kayak for a Cause" and participated in annual kayak crossings of Long Island Sound for five years, joining hundreds of kayakers to raise funds for local charities. Tad has climbed several Colorado 14ers, skied Colorado backcountry bowls, and completed over 40 solo 7-mile hikes at 3 a.m. up 12,622-foot Santa Fe Baldy, New Mexico, in all seasons to witness spectacular sunrises. His outdoor pursuits are inspired by his extensive studies of T.E. Lawrence and George Mallory, who may have been the first to summit Everest in 1924.
In 2008, Tad and two producing partners became the first American company contracted by the Director General of the Supreme Commission for Tourism of Saudi Arabia to produce an eight-day Sea Festival on the southern Red Sea shore of Saudi Arabia.
Tad returned to acting in 2010 after relocating to Santa Fe. His son, screenwriter and actor Ben York Jones, won the 2011 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Like Crazy (2011).
