Nimmi Harasgama is a British-Sri Lankan actor and writer who has received multiple awards. In May 2021, she was nominated for Best Drama Performance at the British National Television Awards for her role as Nurse Mari, a series regular on The Good Karma Hospital (ITV).
In 2020, Nimmi starred as the female lead, Amma/Nalini, in Deepa Mehta’s film Funny Boy.
She performs in English, Sinhala, and Tamil. Her role in the Sinhala film August Sun earned her the Best Actress award at the Las Palmas International Film Festival and the Vishwa Keerthi, Sri Lanka’s highest arts honor. She also led the Tamil short film I Too Have A Name, which competed at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Nimmi is a series regular as Nurse Mari on The Good Karma Hospital, with the fourth season scheduled to film in 2021. She also appears as Detective Alice Brenton in the Netflix series Requiem.
In the British indie film Hello Darling, she portrays Aanya. The film has received numerous international Best Film awards.
Nimmi began her career in theatre, most recently playing the Snow Queen in the West End production of The Snow Queen.
A lifelong writer, her first commissioned work was Auntie Netta's Holiday For Asylum, a one-woman show based on her YouTube character Auntie Netta, produced by UK theatre company Tamasha and premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Her play My Homemade Kite was featured in Kali Theatre’s (UK) Women In War series and had a rehearsed reading at Tristan Bates Theatre. It is currently in development for full productions in both the UK and US.
Her TV show Brown Girl Panic has been optioned by Blue Bear Production Company and recently had a rehearsed reading commissioned by UK’s SKY TV. She also serves as a story consultant and writer for an animated series under development with Blue Bear Productions.
Nimmi is co-writing a screenplay based on an Indian novel for GURU productions.
Her latest character, Brûlée, a satire of social media influencers, has gained widespread popularity on Sri Lankan Instagram. Brûlée joins Auntie Netta, a longstanding YouTube character revived during the 80 days of Sri Lanka’s 24/7 COVID-19 curfew. Auntie Netta was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the WHO’s Sri Lanka campaign to educate the public on COVID-19 safety during that period.
Nimmi is a dedicated human rights advocate. She holds a BA in Drama and Theatre Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her training includes Groundlings Improv School, Lesly Kahn & Co Drama School in Los Angeles, and the New York Film Academy in New York City. During and after the Sri Lankan war, she applied training from John Martin (Pan Intercultural Arts) and Augusto Boal (Theatre of the Oppressed) in projects supporting war- and tsunami-affected children and young adults in the North and East, conducted through the British Council and Save The Children. She has also worked with young adult refugees in the UK through Pan Intercultural Arts.
Much of Nimmi’s writing draws from her experiences as an immigrant and her work with refugees.
