Miguel Angel Caballero, the son of Mexican immigrant farm workers, is an acclaimed Queer Mexican-American/Chicano writer, director, and producer. His passion for storytelling began early in life. Despite limited English skills, he would invent storylines on the spot while interpreting reruns of "Little House On The Prairie" for his grandmother. He later earned a bachelor's degree in Theater from UCLA's School of Theater, Film & Television. As a former actor, Miguel developed a deep understanding of character development, emotional subtleties, and the collaborative essence of filmmaking. This background has shaped him into an empathetic, communicative, and nuanced director, known for his ability to collaborate with actors and help them explore their characters' emotional journeys.
His films have received a total of 47 awards and honors. His recent sci-fi short, THE BALLAD OF TITA AND THE MACHINES, executive produced by Lena Waithe, premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, was showcased at TIFF (Rising Voices), and earned the Humanitas Award and the Latinx Award at HollyShorts. His short film ACUITZERAMO debuted at the Morelia International Film Festival and won 21 international awards, including the Imagen Award. BROKEN SUNFLOWER HEARTS was recognized by Remezcla Magazine as one of the year's best short films by U.S. Latino directors.
The Library of Congress has officially included his three short films—Broken Sunflower Hearts, Acuitzeramo, and The Ballad of Tita and the Machines—in its "Latinx Representation in Film" Research Guide, affirming their cultural and historical importance in Latinx cinema.
Miguel Angel is a Film Independent Project Involve and Fast Track Fellow and an Academy Gold Alumni through the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. His feature screenplay, ANGEL IN RETROGRADE, was one of five selected for Tribeca Untold Stories. He won the Humanitas New Voices Award (2023-2024) and was named by the International Screenwriters Association (ISA) as one of the top 25 screenwriters to watch. Currently, Miguel Angel and his writing partner Luis Antonio Aldana are adapting a sci-fi novel for television with Ley Line Entertainment (Everything Everywhere All At Once).
