Monica Guerritore is an actress, playwright, and director. She made her stage debut at Milan's Piccolo Teatro in 1974 at age 16, playing Ania in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard under Giorgio Strehler’s direction, and has remained active on stage ever since. Her notable roles include Jocasta, Lady Macbeth, Ophelia, Miss Julie, and Marianne in Scenes from a Marriage, directed by Gabriele Lavia. Under Giancarlo Sepe, she portrayed Madame Bovary, Carmen, and The Lady of the Camellias. In 2015, she starred as Judy Garland in Peter Quilter’s End of The Rainbow. Guerritore also wrote and directed Joan of Arc (2004-2008), performed in France, and Mi chiedete di parlare (2011-2013), centered on Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci. In 2019, she directed and starred in Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan, which received critical acclaim. In 2023, she adapted, directed, and starred in Federico Fellini's Ginger & Fred for the stage.
Her first leading television role came in 1976 with Manon Lescaut on Italian public television (RAI). She has since led numerous successful TV productions, including Lovers and Secrets (2004), Saint Augustin (2010), and Eduardo de Filippo’s Saturday Sunday Monday (2012). In film, she starred in Verga's She Wolf (1996), earning a Best Actress nomination at the 1997 David di Donatello Awards. She appeared in Ferzan Ozpetek’s A Perfect Day (2008) and was nominated for Best Actress at the Nastri d'Argento Awards for Ivano De Matteo’s La Bella Gente (2009), which won the Grand Prix at the Annecy Film Festival the same year. Guerritore gained international recognition with the Netflix series Deceitful Love (2024), which led the non-English-language charts for three consecutive weeks after its release.
Her directorial debut feature film, Anna (2025), about Anna Magnani, premiered at the Rome Film Festival in October 2025 and was theatrically released in Italy in November 2025. In 2023, she co-founded LuminaMGR, a next-generation independent production company, alongside her husband Roberto Zaccaria. She served as President of the Campiello Book Prize in 2014 and was appointed Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2011 by President Giorgio Napolitano for her contributions to Art and Culture. Monica Guerritore is also the author of two books: La Forza del Cuore (The Power of the Heart), published by Mondadori in 2010, and Quel che so di lei (What I Know About Her), published by Longanesi in 2019.
