Hermína Franková is a Czech author who graduated from Masaryk University’s School of Pharmacy. Her literary career began in the 1960s, with her first publications appearing during that decade. In 1968, she wrote a children’s short story titled Witch on a Broomstick, which inspired the fantasy comedy film Girl on a Broomstick. Throughout the 1960s, she also produced a variety of adult books, some of which were released internationally. During the 1970s, due to political restrictions, she was banned from publishing under her own name and worked as a pharmacist, publishing several works under pseudonyms. In the 1980s, she resumed publishing under her own name, revisiting the theme of witches with a screenplay for the fantasy comedy mini-series Fire Women. Starting in the 1990s, she returned to full-time writing and co-authored the screenplay for Cinelabyrinth, created for an exhibition in Osaka, Japan. Franková has a deep affection for Southern Bohemia, which has inspired several of her books, including Lake Boy (also published in France) and Hooray! Let’s Travel the World (2014). She enjoys dogs, children, traveling, swimming, reading novels by Daniel Pennac, good food, Campari, and spending time with her family. Currently, she devotes most of her time to her family, which includes two daughters and three granddaughters.
