Robert M. Yost, son of Alice Kern (Yost) and Robert M. Yost and brother to writer Dorothy Yost, received his education in St. Louis public schools and attended Carthage College in Illinois. He began his career as a reporter and writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He later worked for the Los Angeles Examiner, the Los Angeles Morning Herald, and the Hearst syndicate services. In 1920, he became the Publicity Director for Fox West Coast Studios, and in early 1930, he was appointed head of Fox's scenario department. He left Fox shortly after the merger of Fox Film Corporation with Darryl F. Zanuck's Century Pictures.
