Janet was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. Her professional journey began after studying at Toronto's Leah Posluns Theatre. She initially trained in Dance with Jacques Fosier and later pursued Drama under Reva Stern and Rose Dubin. In 1984, she attended The Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, where she studied with Sandford Meisner and graduated in 1985. Janet's film career started in 1986 with Race to Freedom, while she continued honing her skills with Carol Rosenfeld, Kurt Reis, and Neil Freeman at C.A.S.T., and later with Jim Wilson in Los Angeles. Her work in Theatre, Television, and Film has earned recognition in both Canada and the United States. For instance, her performance as Sarah in the television movie Race to Freedom: The Underground Railroad, alongside Courtney B. Vance, earned her a Best Actress Gemini nomination. The film was also screened at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, where Janet was introduced as "one of Canada's best kept secrets." Her role as Susannah Marks on the series Traders garnered her second and third nominations for Best Supporting Actress. In Deepa Mehta's adaptation of The Republic of Love, she portrayed the quirky ex-wife of Bruce Greenwood's Tom Avery. That same year, she appeared opposite Greg Kinnear in the feature film Godsend, starring Robert De Niro. In the final season of the acclaimed series Slings and Arrows, Janet played soap opera diva Barbara Gorman, followed by the role of straightforward lawyer Susan Aimes on NBC's Beautiful People. After her portrayal of Velma Fontaine, a sweet yet streetwise prostitute, in the television movie Spencer Ceremony, New York Magazine highlighted her as "meriting a movie of her own." Her fourth Gemini nomination, for Best Actress in a guest role, came for playing Harriet in an episode of Global Television's Blue Murder. Janet also teaches theatre, staying active on both stage and screen.
