Khigh Dhiegh, born Kenneth G. Dickerson, was an American character actor from New Jersey. Although primarily of African and European descent, he was often cast in East Asian roles. In autobiographical writings, he claimed Italian, Portuguese, and Zulu heritage on his father's side, and Chinese, Egyptian, English, and Spanish heritage on his mother's side.
He is best known for his role as Wo Fat, the Chinese intelligence agent and criminal mastermind, in the police drama "Hawaii Five-O," which aired from 1968 to 1980. Wo Fat was the series' most memorable antagonist. Outside of acting, Dhiegh was a Taoist philosopher holding a doctorate in theology. He authored several philosophical works, including "The Eleventh Wing," and founded a Taoist sanctuary in Hollywood, California. Later in life, he became the rector of a Taoist sanctuary in Tempe, Arizona.
In the 1970s, Dhiegh began making jewelry as a hobby, eventually selling handcrafted pieces to support himself and fund his Taoist organizations. During the early 1990s, he advocated for world citizenship in his public talks and openly criticized nationalism. After his passing, some of his philosophical writings have been revisited in publications by the Centre for Daoist Studies and Pacific Lutheran University.
