Gene Murrell was born in Winter Haven, Florida, where he was heavily involved in theater and supported himself by working at various radio stations. At 21, he relocated to Southern California to pursue acting and music. Although he worked in films and theater, he primarily made his living as a musician, performing 4-6 nights a week at local clubs. Beginning in 1988, he spent his summers playing on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, a practice he maintained for a decade while dividing his time between LA and South Carolina. In 1998, he moved permanently to Hilton Head to lead "The Lawn Jockeys," a popular touring party band. After the band disbanded in 2000, he returned to California with plans to move back the following fall.
Following the events of 9/11 and interest in a management deal to reunite The Lawn Jockeys, Gene chose to remain on Hilton Head. Although the management deal fell through, he took on roles as program director and on-air personality at WWVV-FM and WLOW-FM.
In the summer of 2004, Gene made a film comeback with "Come Away Home." The cast and crew formed a strong bond, leading Gene to describe the experience as "2 minutes of screen time and 6 weeks of partying." He continued his music and radio work on Hilton Head until spring 2006, when he accepted the position of Program Director at WZEW in Mobile, Alabama. While in Mobile, Gene became active in the local theater community, earning multiple awards for his stage performances, including Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar" and Pseudolus in "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum." He also appeared in the feature film "The Saints Of Mt Christopher."
In spring 2012, Gene left WZEW and toured as the Tour Manager for singer-songwriter Laura Warshauer. After the tour, he moved back to Southern California to continue his acting and music career.
He returned to WZEW and Mobile in August 2013. Since then, he appeared in the film "Vice," starring Bruce Willis. Between 2014 and 2015, Gene portrayed the title role in "Shrek The Musical" and Tevye in "Fiddler On The Roof," earning "Outstanding Performance by an Actor" awards for both roles.
