Bob Goen, born and raised in Long Beach, California, earned a degree in telecommunications and film from San Diego State University in 1976. The next year, he leveraged his college radio experience to secure a part-time position at KFOX radio in Long Beach. This opportunity led to his first full-time role as a disc jockey and producer at KPRO in Riverside, where he eventually advanced to program director. In the early 1980s, he transitioned to television as a sports anchor at KESQ-TV, the ABC affiliate in Palm Springs.
During that period, Bob also worked as ESPN's desert-area correspondent. After four and a half years, he moved to Hollywood and hosted syndicated game shows including Perfect Match (1986) and Home Shopping Game (1987), as well as Blackout (1988) on CBS. He also hosted the daytime Wheel of Fortune from 1989 to 1991, CBS's primetime The Hollywood Game (1992), and Lifetime's Born Lucky (1992). Between 1993 and 1996, he was the emcee for the worldwide broadcasts of the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA pageants on CBS.
Before becoming the permanent host of Entertainment Tonight in May 1996, Bob served as a substitute anchor. He joined ET on April 11, 1993, as a correspondent and weekend anchor. His strong journalistic skills and knowledge quickly earned him interviews with top actors, actresses, and musicians such as Nicole Kidman and Sir Elton John. During his sixth season, he made notable visits to the sets of two different films.
In his free time, Bob organizes an annual golf tournament called the "Bob Goen's Lexus Invitational," which supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
