Ali MacLean is a celebrated playwright, filmmaker, and actor from Boston.
She trained at the La Jolla Playhouse Conservatory under Tony Award winner Des McAnuff and studied classical theater with Tony Church of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her short films have received awards and been featured at numerous festivals, including Toronto, Palm Springs, Atlanta, Victoria, Maryland, New York's Gen Art series, and earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Method Festival.
Her play She's Not There won the 2018 John Gassner Award and other honors, and was named Best Production of 2019 by She NYC Arts. Ali received a Broadway World Directing Award nomination for the same play. Wolves At The Door, another of her plays, won the Julie Harris Playwriting Award and was a semi-finalist for the O'Neill National Playwright's Conference.
Ali’s screenplays have reached semi-finalist status in the Chesterfield Writer's Project, Scriptapalooza, and Screencraft multiple times, and she was a finalist in the IFP Filmmakers Program. Her pilot Lady Killer was a WeScreenplay finalist, participated in the Orchard Project Episodic Lab, and won the 2018 Writers For Writers fellowship. She is a member of the Imagine Impact Creative Network, participated in the 2015 Women In Film Mentorship, and is a 2020 alumna of the RespectAbility Lab. Ali won the 2020 David Sedaris Humor Writing Prize and contributed to the 24 Hour Plays Viral Monologues.
In addition to her writing and filmmaking, Ali has worked as a radio and podcast host, gaining popularity on the cult Los Angeles station Indie 103.1 FM, as well as Sirius, Little Radio, and various online platforms. She is also a published author.
