Paul W. Cooper has worked as a freelance television and motion picture screenwriter for over thirty years. With more than 70 television credits and one feature film, his accolades include three Emmys, the Humanitas Prize, and the Writers Guild Award.
He penned the critically acclaimed film ONCE UPON A TIME WHEN WE WERE COLORED, which received Best Picture honors at the Movie Guide Awards.
His television work includes MURDER, SHE WROTE, HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, and THE WALTONS. He also served as Story Editor on Oprah Winfrey's drama series BREWSTER PLACE.
Paul has written 21 ABC and CBS AFTERSCHOOL SPECIALS addressing major social issues such as incest, alcoholism, physical abuse, homosexuality, and racism. Several of these specials won Emmys for Best Television Special due to their impactful social and dramatic themes.
He has written numerous films for cable networks including Showtime, Disney, Animal Planet, and Family Channel. Additionally, he wrote and directed the interactive CD-ROM video game CHESS WARS: A MEDIEVAL FANTASY, which won Best New Game in 1996. Paul has also taught Film and Television writing at Pepperdine University.
After graduating from the University of Tulsa with a business degree, Paul served six years as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. A Vietnam veteran, he began writing scripts during long alert hours as an aircraft commander in the Strategic Air Command. Following many years of agent rejections, he caught the attention of Earl Hamner, creator of THE WALTONS, who encouraged him to pursue television writing in Hollywood. Paul and his wife, Donna, currently reside in the Los Angeles area.
