Lawrence Kane, of Irish and Scottish descent, grew up in London. Initially trained as an artist, he later pursued music, playing the saxophone, trombone, and drums. He concluded his musical career as the lead singer of the South London band Point Taken. Subsequently, he trained as a classical actor at The Arts Educational School in the Barbican, London, alongside classmates such as Martin Clunes, Amanda Harris, and Lisa Jacobs. After graduating, he toured Britain performing in various theater productions.
He then earned a BA Hons degree in Media and Cultural Studies from Middlesex University, where he began writing and directing plays. Following graduation, he secured a position at BBC TV in Drama Series & Serials, training as an Assistant Director on shows including EastEnders, Howard's Way, Big Deal, and the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries.
In 1992, he adapted and directed the world stage premiere of E.M. Forster's novel A Room With A View, which achieved critical and commercial success across theaters in England. He later produced The Token King, a TV musical comedy drama for Channel 4 starring Samantha Morton in her first leading film role.
In 1996, he moved to Los Angeles to advance his film and television career. He wrote and directed two award-winning short films, The Disturbance At Dinner and Wonderland...it ain't. An award-winning screenwriter, his work has been optioned by production companies in the US and Canada. He has contributed to over 30 film and TV projects, including serving as showrunner and production producer on the $18 million MTV and Canadian TV series Undressed, created by award-winning director Roland Joffe.
As of 2024, Lawrence is developing two feature film projects, Capture and Ruby Ridge.
