He is a Canadian actor who has spent nearly forty years exclusively in the entertainment industry. Proud to be among the working actors—almost as rare as superstars—he earns his living through performance. His North American theatre experience includes work with Actor's Theatre Louisville, Cincinnati Playhouse, and venues across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver, and Niagara Falls to Fort McMurray.
As a co-writer and editor, he has twenty-five years of published work, starting with English-as-a-Second Language radio and television scripts for Holland and Denmark, and an Adult Functional Literacy project for Access Television in Alberta. He has authored six books and numerous newsletter articles focused on the performer’s profession. He co-wrote Tax Kit 2000+ and The Actor's Survival Kit, and founded, published, and wrote The Agents Book for six years. Recently, he contributed as an original drafter to Making It, the Career Management Guide for Artists and Cultural Workers by the Cultural Human Resources Council.
He is also a tax preparer and founding member of the Tax Caucus, a group of performers’ tax preparers supported by Equity and ACTRA. Recognized by Revenue Canada (now CRA) as an industry-specific advisory group, the Caucus has produced basic tax information for performers and an auditor briefing approved for future use by Revenue Canada.
As an educator, he co-presented Canada’s first curriculum-based Acting-As-A-Business course with Miriam Newhouse at the University of Alberta. Since then, he has delivered similar programs privately and at institutions including Ryerson, George Brown, Randolph Academy, Canadian Opera Company, Langara College, and York University.
He is an activist and founding volunteer of the Acting and Modelling Information Service, a group of industry volunteers dedicated to protecting newcomers from ignorance and fraud through a help hotline, lobbying efforts, and ongoing pressure on unscrupulous parties.
He is Joe Ordinary: a successful performer who still encounters entry-level challenges through his tax clients and students. His research continues, but his perspective remains that of a grassroots performer.
