Zaib Shaikh began his tenure as Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles in December 2018, serving as the Government of Canada's chief representative for Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada.
He arrived at this role following a long career in the media and entertainment sectors, working as an actor and producer across theatre, film, and television. His acting credits include Deepa Mehta's film Midnight's Children, and he starred in the CBC comedy series Little Mosque on the Prairie, which has been broadcast in over 80 countries. Mr. Shaikh co-produced the special Long Story Short: CBC Turns 75 and co-wrote, directed, and co-produced the film Othello: The Tragedy of the Moor. Additionally, he co-founded and was an artistic producer for the Whistler Theatre Project in British Columbia.
Between 2014 and 2018, Mr. Shaikh served as the Film Commissioner and Director of Entertainment Industries for the City of Toronto. In this position, he managed and expanded the city's screen, music, live festival, sporting event, and tourism industries, contributing to a doubling in film production value in Canada’s largest city, which exceeded $2 billion in 2016.
He has been a board member for the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, and most recently for AFC (formerly the Actors Fund of Canada). Mr. Shaikh has also participated on juries and committees for the Gemini Awards, ACTRA Awards, Ontario Arts Council, and Theatre Ontario Youth Program, and has served as an ambassador for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Amnesty International Canada.
Mr. Shaikh is married to Kirstine Stewart, and they have two children.
