Gary Numan, born Gary Anthony James Webb in Hammersmith, London, on March 8, 1958, began his career working as a dispatch boy for a courier company at Heathrow, where his father was a bus driver. His first band, Mean Street, primarily used him because he owned a lot of music equipment. He later joined The Lasers, where he met Paul Gardiner, and together they formed The Tubeway Army. Their debut album, Tubeway Army, was recorded with Gary, Paul, and Gary's uncle, Jess Lidyard, on drums. During the recording, Gary discovered a synthesizer in the studio owned by his label, Beggars Banquet, which inspired him to create music using synthesizers. His first hit, "Are 'Friends' Electric?", was released in 1979 and reached number one on the UK charts, followed by "Cars," which also topped the charts. Thirty years after his debut, Gary Numan continues to record studio albums and perform live.
