While attending McGill University, Phil began directing and producing music videos for local bands. As his work gained recognition for its originality, numerous artists and labels approached him to direct music videos. In 2001, Phil founded Philms Inc. He transitioned to commercials and soon decided to pursue feature filmmaking. Collaborating with writing partner Myles Hainsworth, they wrote the script for Summer, which Phil directed in the summer of 2002. The following year, Phil directed his second feature, Hatley High. In 2005, he won the Best Director award for Hatley High at the US Comedy Arts Festival, where the film also earned Best Screenplay. Phil created the festival, an original television series for the Independent Film Channel (IFC). It was IFC’s first original scripted live-action series, premiering on August 19, 2005. Phil not only created the six-episode comedy but also served as head writer, director, and co-editor. Due to its critical and ratings success, IFC ordered a second season spin-off titled The Business, an eight-episode comedy starring Kathleen Robertson, which premiered on August 4, 2006. Phil again took on the roles of creator, head writer, director, and co-editor. In October 2006, Phil directed his third feature film, Prom Wars, a teen comedy about a rivalry between boys' private schools where the winners gain exclusive rights to prom dates. The film stars Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Raviv Ullman (Phil of the Future) and was set to hit theaters for Prom 2007. Phil is currently preparing the third season of his IFC show, The Business, again serving as creator, head writer, director, and co-editor. The series is scheduled to premiere on August 17, 2007.
