Donald Miller was born in Houston, Texas. At twenty-one, he traveled across America with a friend in a Volkswagen van. They ran out of money in the Pacific Northwest and lived in the woods of the Cascade Mountains in central Oregon.
Drawn to storytelling, Don documented this journey in his travel memoir Through Painted Deserts. He later entered the publishing world, helping bring others’ stories to life. Starting his own company with little money, he wrote Blue Like Jazz, which, over two years after its release, reached the New York Times Bestsellers List and remained there for more than 40 weeks.
While writing a book on fatherlessness, Don launched a mentoring program in Portland aimed at supporting over a million fatherless children nationwide. This work led to an invitation from Barack Obama to join the Presidential Task Force on Fatherhood and Healthy Families.
Don’s latest book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, explores how the components of a compelling story can illuminate what makes a meaningful life. This book also made the New York Times Bestsellers List and inspired companies to collaborate with Don to enhance employee engagement and deepen customer connection to their corporate narratives.
He has appeared on various television programs such as NPR’s Tavis Smiley and Fox News’ The Strategy Room, and has spoken at events including the Veritas Forum at Harvard and national corporate conferences for brands like Chick-fil-A.
Don currently resides and works in Nashville, Tennessee.
