Norma Zúñiga, a Cuban character actress and comedienne, began her career at the age of eight as a dancer in tent shows run by her uncle. By fourteen, she had joined the renowned Enrique Arredondo theatrical troupe, touring the island's stages with great success. As a young adult, she performed as a featured dancer at Havana's popular Palette Club and soon appeared in theaters and on television, where she honed her skills in parody and comedy.
Norma starred in numerous plays and television sitcoms, becoming one of Cuba's most beloved young stars. However, following the 1959 Cuban revolution, her situation deteriorated. In 1960, she joined hundreds of thousands of fellow Cubans in exile, relocating to Miami, Florida. Although starting over in a place where she was unknown was challenging, she refused to live under a communist regime. Through perseverance, she eventually showcased her versatility on Spanish radio and in theaters across Miami and New York City.
In 1962 and throughout her career, she appeared on Sábado Gigante (1962–2015), an eclectic entertainment show that was both Univision's longest-running TV series and the longest-running television variety show in history. Another significant opportunity came in 1965 when she played Nananina in the sitcom La tremenda corte (The Tremendous Court), based on the iconic comedy broadcast on Cuban and Latin American radio from 1942 to 1961. She also co-starred in the PBS hit Qué pasa, U.S.A.? (1977–1979), portraying two characters: the santera Asunción and Mrs. Suarez.
Her success continued on stage and television, where she became a sought-after character actress in popular, highly rated telenovelas such as Ángel rebelde (2004), Sacrificio de mujer (2011), and Cosita Linda (2014), among many others. Norma Zúñiga remains undeniably a versatile and enduring talent.
