Born in Lons-le-Saunier, Jura, France, Robinson Stévenin is the son of the renowned French actor, comedian, director, and writer Jean-François Stévenin. He has earned acclaim from critics and audiences worldwide as one of France's most versatile actors of his generation. Quiet and soft-spoken, Robinson hails from a family of performers; both his older brother Sagamore and younger sister Salomé are also actors. He began acting at the age of five in his father's second feature, Double messieurs (1986). He later took on numerous roles in TV movies, plays, and small supporting parts in films such as L'hydrolution (1989) and La révolte des enfants (1992), the latter earning him his first Best Actor nomination and award at the Paris Film Festival at just ten years old—a sign of the talent to come.
Choosing to focus on selective television roles to develop his craft, Robinson then portrayed complex characters like the cunning Laurent in Mauvaises fréquentations (1999), a boy who arranges for his girlfriend to see a prostitute, a role that garnered him his first César Award nomination for Most Promising Actor in 2000. He followed this with his portrayal of Bo, a shy young transvestite, in Francis Girod's Transfixed (2001), winning the César Award for Most Promising Actor. Known for his chameleon-like ability to embody diverse roles, Robinson solidified his reputation as one of France's most gifted actors.
He reunited with his father for Mischka (2002) and had a brief but memorable role in Two (2002) as a mysterious young man on a bike who captivates Isabelle Huppert. His standout performance in His Brother (2003) further showcased his talent. Robinson is selective about his roles, regardless of their size. He appeared in Claude Miller's La petite Lili (2003), where he formed a close bond with co-star Ludivine Sagnier. He starred in Mon colonel (2006) as Guy Rossi, a military lawyer confronted with the harsh realities of torture during the Algerian War, marking the first film written and produced by Costa-Gavras. This was followed by the provocative Trance (2006), the anticipated C'est beau une ville la nuit (2006), and Actresses (2007).
