His father was half Cherokee, and he was born on a Choctaw Indian reservation. He worked in Texas picking cotton until his sharecropper family relocated to California to harvest fruit. He began writing while serving in the Army during the Korean War and later earned a Master’s degree from San Francisco State University. His debut novel, "As I Was Young and Easy" (1958), was completed in 17 days. He authored three other novels: "Spore 7" (1979), "Honktonk Man" (1980), which was adapted into a film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, and "Children of the Dust" (1995), a CBS mini-series produced by Sidney Poitier about the settlement of Oklahoma. He passed away at South Austin Hospital, survived by two sisters, Peggy Lasado and Jane Sanders, a son named Steven, and four grandchildren.
