Derin Emre is a writer, filmmaker, and creative producer based in Montreal. He is a co-founder of the YouTube channel Yes Theory and was an active member from 2015 to 2017. He co-wrote the feature film Everything Outside (2018), directed by David Findlay and starring Louise Portal. The film premiered at the Vancouver and Durban International Film Festivals before its theatrical release in Canada.
His work spans narrative, essay film, and docufiction, with titles including The Space Between (2016), 1001 Ways to Die in Istanbul (2018), Encyclopedia of Istanbul (2018), Gehenna (2024), and the archival film series My Name is Derin Emre: An Auto-Portrait of Love and Television (2019). He also created the audiovisual project Sight Unheard (2018-2020), which was exhibited at the Toronto Light Festival.
Emre is the co-author of Talk to Strangers: The Yes Theory Story (2023), written with fellow Yes Theory co-founder Matt Dahlia. His writing has appeared in literary journals such as Chicago Quarterly Review, The Pinch, and Grain.
The first installment of his short video essay series for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's documentary platform, CBC Docs, Occupation Double, Mon Amour, was released in July 2025.
Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, Emre is a graduate of Robert College and holds BA and MA degrees in Comparative Literature from New York University.
