Raised in a musical family, Ian began performing at a young age. By four, he was known as "Vancouver's Little Harry Lauder," singing a medley of the renowned Scottish entertainer's songs. His studies soon expanded to include dancing, bagpipes, piano, Eb alto horn, and music theory.
In high school, he started acting and later attended UBC as an opera major. He then moved to Toronto, Ontario, where he continued performing in choirs, musicals, and operettas. He also ventured into playwriting, with two of his plays—I'll Go Where Hugo and Going Down Under—being produced in Toronto, alongside writing screenplays.
At 40, Ian began composing music, creating two chamber operas (Benjamin Brown and Cassandra), a string symphony, and various chamber, choral, and vocal pieces. Additionally, he wrote several short musicals for elementary schools.
At 50, he started acting in Ryerson University student films. Since returning to his hometown of Vancouver in December 2010, he has continued to develop his career in acting and voice-over work, alongside his writing and composing endeavors.
