Gwynyth Walsh was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alberta and began her career performing on stage across Canada and the United States in numerous classic plays. Her portrayal of Beatrice in William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" earned her a Dramalogue Award for Best Actress. Walsh is best known for her recurring role as the Klingon B'Etor, sister of Lursa from the House of Duras, appearing in all Star Trek series except Star Trek: Voyager (1995) and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001). She also appeared in the feature film Star Trek: Generations (1994). In the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Random Thoughts" (1997), she did not portray B'Etor. In 1993, she starred in the psychological thriller The Crush, where her on-screen husband was played by Kurtwood Smith.
In 1998, Walsh began another notable role as Dr. Patricia Da Vinci, the City of Vancouver Coroner's Pathologist and ex-wife of Dominic Da Vinci, in the award-winning series Da Vinci's Inquest. In 2002, she appeared in the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries Taken alongside Matt Frewer, Anton Yelchin, Rob LaBelle, and Brian Markinson. She has acted in many popular drama and sci-fi series in Canada and the U.S., including Stargate SG-1 (1997), Supernatural (2005), and Smallville (2001). In 2006, she portrayed Esther Heyman in the A&E film about Flight 93 during the 9/11 attacks. That same year, she appeared in the critically acclaimed series Commander in Chief (2005), starring Geena Davis as the President. In 2007, she featured in the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries Tin Man, a reimagining of "The Wizard of Oz." Walsh continues to work actively on stage and screen and remains in demand within Canadian television. She splits her time between Los Angeles and Vancouver.
