Bill Lae is an award-winning filmmaker who wrote, directed, and produced the critically acclaimed mockumentary SuperGuy: Behind the Cape (praised by Daily Variety). Both SuperGuy and Bill’s Young Merlin entered development with Paramount Television. Influenced by the original Ghostbusters, his scripts blend comedy with fantastical elements. SuperGuy is superhero-themed; Crossing Over explores the supernatural; U.F.OH! delves into science fiction and extraterrestrials; Magi focuses on fantasy and wizards.
Recently, Bill has been creating short-form comedy for the internet. His Cooking with Carmine campaign for Lyco-Red went viral, generating over $9 million in earned media. The Champions of Greatness series won “Best Marketing Campaign” at ExpoWest, the premier trade show for natural, organic, and healthy products.
Inspired by the original Star Wars films, Bill became a visual effects artist and has extensive experience in VFX for TV shows like Buffy, The X-Files, and The Outer Limits. He is currently launching The Fanverse Games, a parody sketch-comedy combined with a Jeopardy-style game show for fans of sci-fi, fantasy, and superheroes.
Bill produced, wrote, and directed Couch Critics, a TV series offering comedic, hip film analysis and criticism, blending elements of At the Movies with Saturday Night Live. Five episodes aired locally in Los Angeles. Beyond production, Bill is also a stand-up comedian, having performed at the World Famous Improv in Hollywood and the California Comedy Conference.
An expert in creating impactful “sizzle” and maximizing value, Bill produced and directed his indie film SuperGuy: Behind the Cape, which involved building an entire fictional world. He was then contracted by the TV Guide Network to direct their Up-Fronts (network demo reels for TV sponsors) for three consecutive years. Bill excels at taking projects from initial concept to finished product.
