Born in Rochdale on May 14, 1975, Gemma trained at Oldham's renowned Theatre Workshop under the guidance of David Johnson. She began her professional career at age 10, starring in numerous leading roles in children's television dramas, including a series regular role as Holly Painter in Wilderness Edge, as well as appearances in How We Used To Live, The 8:15 From Manchester, and Dramarama.
At 16, she was cast in the Manchester production of Les Misérables. Within a year, Cameron Mackintosh offered her the lead role of Éponine in the West End production in London.
Her other theatre credits include originating the role of Serena Katz in the original London cast of Fame, playing Mrs Lester in the original London cast of Betty Blue Eyes, Miss Red in the original London cast of Shout!, and Cinderella's Mother in the Olivier Award-winning production of Into The Woods at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. On screen, she was a series regular as Chris Jacobs in Channel Five’s soap Family Affairs, worked alongside Victoria Wood and Julie Walters in the television film Pat And Margaret, and appeared in the epic Les Misérables movie. More recently, Gemma portrayed Mrs Brown in the CBBC drama Harriet's Army.
Additional television credits include Doctors (BBC), Life On Mars (BBC), Holby City (BBC), and Supplies (ITV Granada). Gemma is also a regular voice-over artist for film, television, and radio. She has recorded several productions for BBC Radio 4, including Relative Strangers, There's a Valley in Spain, and The Stone Book. Her Big Finish credits include Wendy Plainfolk in Judge Dredd and Alys in Doctor Who alongside Colin Baker.
