During his national service, he managed three theatres, aiding in the rehabilitation of servicemen. He then enrolled at The Old Vic Theatre School for acting training. After completing his studies, he accepted an invitation from Tyrone Guthrie to join the theatre company led by Donald Wolfit. Spending a season there, he performed in King Lear and Tamburlaine before transitioning to London's West End, where he appeared in productions such as Pay the Piper, The Burning Boat, The Devil's Disciple, The Rule of Three, and The Happiest Millionaire. Moving into film, he featured in titles like Funeral in Berlin, Diamonds Are Forever, and Pope Joan. Fluent in German, he was cast as a German character in films including Operation Crossbow and Attack on the Iron Coast. On television, he portrayed Chingachgook in the serial The Last of the Mohicans, earning an Emmy nomination for Best Actor. Over ten years, he played four roles in the series Doctor Who and guest-starred in shows like Blake's 7, Red Dwarf, and the second and third series of The Survivors. His other TV appearances include parts in Redcap, Minder, Bergerac, The Bill, and Casualty. His two sons, Sebastian and Daniel, are also actors.
