Mr. Wellman was born and raised in the Midwest. Initially a musician, he discovered a passion for theatre while pursuing graduate studies at UCLA. He trained with Lee Strasberg and Peggy Feury at the Strasberg Institute and spent an additional ten years at The Loft Theater. His first significant break came when he was cast as Lee Marvin's son in the Paramount film The Klansman, starring Lee Marvin and Richard Burton. He went on to work in episodic television, theatre, and films, including notable roles in Sudden Impact, Sommersby, Street of Dreams, and Curfew.
As a writer, Mr. Wellman collaborated with UCLA friend Alex Lasker to adapt the book Firefox for director Clint Eastwood. He worked with Eastwood on three projects: co-writing Firefox, doing on-set revisions for Eastwood's Dirty Harry hit Sudden Impact while also playing the role of Tyrone in the film. Though he took no credit for his work, Eastwood rewarded him by persuading Warner Bros. studio chief Marc Rosenberg to offer Wellman a two-picture writing deal the following spring. Eastwood later hired him again to develop a final Dirty Harry project, which remains confidential.
Warner Bros. also hired Wellman to adapt the novel Fair Game for the screen, aiming to cast Sylvester Stallone (Cobra). Wellman completed the adaptation, and Stallone signed on but made his own on-set revisions during filming. In a close WGA arbitration, Wellman lost his screen credit by one percentage point.
Beyond Warner Bros., Mr. Wellman completed paid writing assignments for Paramount, Universal, Fox, and Embassy Pictures. He has also lectured and taught screenwriting at UCLA, the Santa Fe Screenwriting Festival, Artists and Residents in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and StoryBoard at Fox Studios in Los Angeles.
