Anna Vissi was born in the picturesque coastal town of Larnaca on the island of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean. Her father, Nestor Vissis, owned a small supermarket, while her mother, Sophia, was a housewife with a passion for singing. This love for music was passed down to her three daughters: Lia, Anna, and Nicki. Anna demonstrated vocal talent from an early age, while her older sister Lia showed considerable skill as a pianist. As teenagers, they formed "The Vissi Sisters" and toured Cyprus, performing mainly Greek folk songs at local festivals organized by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.
Nestor eventually closed his shop and moved the family to Athens, where the three daughters completed their high school education. At sixteen, Anna signed her first recording contract. She soon began performing alongside two of Greece's biggest music stars, George Dalaras and Haris Alexiou.
In 1983, Anna married rock composer Nikos Karvelas, whose influence dramatically transformed her career. The image of the clean-cut, fresh-faced young girl from Cyprus gave way to a more daring style, featuring more revealing outfits and a shift toward pop-oriented music. The 1990s became her defining decade, as she released hit album after hit album, often with Nikos as her composer and lyricist. She also starred in two original Broadway-style musicals, "Demons" and "Mala," both written by her husband as vehicles to showcase her talent, achieving great success.
Following the death of Greek superstar Aliki Vougiouklaki in 1996, Anna emerged as a favorite of the Greek press, earning the title of "mega-star" and frequently appearing on the covers and in the fashion spreads of Greece's leading magazines.
