Mark Mangini, a two-time Academy Award winner for Dune and Mad Max: Fury Road and six-time nominee, is a renowned Sound Designer known for his work on films such as Blade Runner 2049, Star Trek I, IV, and V, The Fifth Element, and Gremlins. Over his 45-year career in Hollywood, he has crafted and shaped unique sonic environments for motion pictures. A frequent lecturer and passionate advocate for sound as an art form, he is also a guitarist and songwriter with credits including Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Star Trek IV, and Picard. Mark is a member of AMPAS, MPSE, SAG, SMPTE, and ASCAP.
"Growing up as a musician, I firmly believe that all organized sound is music. I view my film work as compositions on par with those of Beethoven and the Beatles. I simply employ dissonance, unconventional melodies, and arrhythmia to their fullest effect. My creations are deliberate, designed, creative, and manipulative—they just aren't necessarily hummable."
A native of Boston, Mark initially attended Holy Cross College as a foreign language major but was drawn to film and filmmaking. He moved to Los Angeles in 1976 and secured his first entertainment industry job at Hanna-Barbera Studios in the sound department, creating humorous sounds for children's cartoons at age 19. "My ears, sharpened through years of language study and guitar playing, prepared me well for a career of critical listening and inventing extraordinary aural worlds and sonic realities for films."
Mark founded and operated Weddington Productions, a successful Hollywood post-production sound company, for 25 years. He currently works at Formosa Group in Hollywood, California, continuing his role as a Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-recording Mixer.
