Robert S. Baker, born in London, served as an artilleryman in the British army during World War II, stationed in North Africa where he met his future partner Monty Berman. He later joined the army's film and photography unit and became a combat cameraman in Europe. After the war, Baker and Berman established Tempean Films, debuting with the comedy Date with a Dream (1948), starring Terry-Thomas and Norman Wisdom. The company produced numerous low-budget "B" movies, including comedies, mysteries, and thrillers, many directed by Baker. In 1959, they released a darker film, Jack the Ripper, a fictionalized portrayal of the infamous Whitechapel serial killer. The following year, they produced the grittier crime thriller The Siege of Sidney Street (1960), depicting the true 1911 shootout between police and Russian criminals in East London. They then made The Hellfire Club (1961), a lackluster adventure film, followed by The Secret of Monte Cristo (1961), a lesser-known adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel.
During the 1960s, Berman and Baker focused on television, primarily producing the series The Saint (1962). Baker later became a producer on Gideon C.I.D. (1964). After that series ended, Baker and Roger Moore, star of The Saint, formed Bamore Productions, which produced the feature-length spin-off The Fiction-Makers (1968) and the Moore/Tony Curtis crime-adventure series The Persuaders! (1971). Baker also produced the series Return of the Saint (1978) and Return to Treasure Island (1986).
