Jim Hemphill is an award-winning screenwriter and director known for THE TROUBLE WITH THE TRUTH, a romantic drama praised by critics with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, featuring Lea Thompson and John Shea. He earned his B.F.A. from Columbia College Chicago and a graduate degree from USC's film school. Jim launched his career with the micro-budget horror film BAD REPUTATION, which secured international DVD and VOD distribution through Warner Bros. and Twentieth-Century Fox. Beyond filmmaking, Jim is a respected film historian whose writing has appeared in the Chicago Reader, Film Comment, Film Quarterly, Moviemaker, and other publications. He serves as a researcher and interviewer for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Visual History Project and has provided historical audio commentaries for DVD releases of films such as Stanley Kramer's INHERIT THE WIND, Francis Coppola's GARDENS OF STONE, and Clint Eastwood's HANG 'EM HIGH. Jim hosts a podcast on American Cinematographer’s website, featuring interviews with leading directors of photography, and writes Focal Point, a directing column for Filmmaker Magazine. As a programming consultant for the Egyptian and Aero theaters in Los Angeles, he has moderated conversations with notable figures including Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, Nicolas Cage, David Mamet, Jim Jarmusch, Paul Schrader, Viggo Mortensen, and Shirley MacLaine. His films have been showcased at numerous film festivals and art houses worldwide, including Sundance Film Festival, American Cinematheque, Facets Multimedia, Alamo Drafthouse, and ArcLight Hollywood.
