While Roberto was as student of communications in Mexico, he was offered a job as a reporter in the magazine Proceso. Two years later, and still a student, he took a position as a writer in the newscast CNI Noticias in channel 40. He was promoted to Chief Writer and after leading the transmissions from Seoul in the 2002 World Cup, was appointed Executive Producer of CNI Noticias and later Production Director.
Following a legal dispute with media giant TV Azteca, CNI shut down and Roberto decided to get involved in independent coaching and corporate communications strategies, which he still does as a side job. After a brief stay in MTV Networks as news producer, Milenio Diario, one of the most important newspapers in Mexico, offered him the position of chief editor in La afición, the newspaper's sports section. When Milenio decided to have a 24-hour news channel in 2008, Roberto was appointed Production Director. In June 2011 he became Television Director and took charge of the whole operation. He is also a columnist in La afición and does a daily comment in Radio Fórmula, Mexico's leading national radio broadcaster.
