Hyunri LEE, known simply as "Hyunri" in Japan and Korea, was born in Tokyo, Japan, to Korean parents. She is fully bilingual in Japanese and Korean. During her teenage years, she lived in Oxford, England. She later moved to Korea to study acting at the Shin-Yong Wook Acting Academy while attending Yonsei University as an exchange student from Aoyama Gakuin University, where she majored in law. After graduating, she returned to Japan and secured roles in numerous Japanese films and popular TV shows.
In 2016, Hyunri landed her first leading role as a Japanese-Korean girl living in Tokyo in "The Voice of Water," which was officially selected for the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. The film earned several awards, including the Rising Star Award at the 29th Takasaki Film Festival. She also won the People's Choice Asian Star Award at the 2017 Seoul International Drama Awards.
In 2020, she played a supporting role as Hiroko Kusakabe in "Wife of a Spy," directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. In 2021, she portrayed Tsugumi in "The Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy," directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, which received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
In Japan, she is best known for her role as Saeko Harada in "Mistresses," based on the BBC TV series, and as Yoon Jian in Hulu’s 2021 drama "Love You as the World Ends." From 2017 to 2022, Hyunri hosted her own radio show on J-WAVE, one of Tokyo's largest radio stations. She is fluent in Japanese, Korean, and English.
