Vern Freedlander is a Toronto based producer, director, educator and media consultant. With deep roots in broadcast journalism, he was instrumental in the launch of CTV News Channel, Global National, the re-brand of the Global Television Network and the production of multiple high profile national news specials and election broadcasts. He left television news to help start X2O Media, a technology start up, that focused on the development and creation of specialized media networks used in the media, retail and corporate communications industries. After the successful sale of X2O Media, Freedlander returned to university to complete a master’s degree in media production. His research thesis focused on media audience fragmentation, the growth of community-based fandom and the resulting unique business challenges and opportunities for niche (single genre) streaming services. Vern’s combination of broadcast, technology and academic work led directly to the establishment of Grace Street Media, a media consultancy and production company. Grace Street has worked with government cultural agencies, production companies, broadcasters, technology companies, and media entrepreneurs, in addition to producing original content. Vern continues to be involved in academia as a lecturer and researcher.
