She was raised in Utah. Flint completed her high school education in Germany, earning her diploma there. Her aspiration to become a doctor was thwarted by the numerus clausus system. Initially, she worked as a photo model, waitress, and beautician before undertaking three years of acting training at the Otto Falckenberg School. She performed in several theaters, including the Munich Residenztheater. Receiving favorable reviews, Katja Flint transitioned to film. In 1983, she landed her first leading role in the post-war drama "Kolp" opposite Heiner Lauterbach. Although the film did not perform well with audiences, critics praised it. She then appeared in films such as "Forget Mozart," "Only Women, No Life," "The Democratic Terrorist," and "You'll Kill Me." Her breakthrough came in 1994 with "The Winners," directed by Dominik Graf.
She subsequently starred in the TV films "The Venus Killer" and "Silent Steps," both of which achieved high ratings. Flint became recognized as a new kind of woman exuding erotic charisma. In 1985, she married actor Heiner Lauterbach. At 38, she was named "The Most Beautiful Woman in Germany" by Bunte magazine. In 1995, she appeared in "The Girl Rosemarie," directed by Bernd Eichinger, alongside Nina Hoss and Heiner Lauterbach. This was followed in 1997 by "Widows - First Marriage, Then Pleasure," directed by Sherry Hormann and featuring Ornella Muti, Eva Mattes, Martin Benrath, and Uwe Ochsenknecht. However, some of her films did not favor her career, such as the silly comedy "Voll normaaal" (1994) with Tom Gerhardt and "Ballermann 6" (1997). That same year, she also appeared in "Apartment for a Suicide" and "Vicky's Nightmare."
In 1999, she acted in Thomas Bohn's "Straight Shooter" with Heino Ferch, Dennis Hopper, and Ulrich Mühe. In 2000, she portrayed the iconic actress and singer Marlene Dietrich in "Marlene," produced by Bernd Eichinger; the film won the Hollywood Film Award. However, her role in the exaggerated 2000 satire "Suck My Dick" did little to enhance her reputation as a serious actress. In her personal life, her marriage to Heiner Lauterbach ended in 2001; their son Oskar was born in 1988. They separated in 1991. From 2001 to 2006, she was in a relationship with Austrian writer Peter Handke. In the film "The White Masai," she played the alcoholic character Elisabeth. In 2007, she appeared in the comedy "Why Men Don't Listen and Women Park Badly," based on Leander Haußmann's work. In 2009, she starred in "Beyond the Wall."
In 2012, Flint played the second leading role alongside Saskia Vester in the TV film "Getting Married Is Not a Solution Either." In 2018, she took on another leading role in the crime drama "Der Turm." This was followed by the TV film "My Mother's Friend" in 2019.
