Monica Mustelier is an award-winning Afro-Latina writer and director who experiences hives in cold weather. As a performer, she was frequently killed off in notable films and TV shows, including True Justice starring Steven Seagal, Hardwired (a direct-to-DVD release featuring Val Kilmer), and Smallville, where she was credited as a screaming nurse.
Fed up with being killed off, Monica rose like a phoenix to craft relatable and engaging stories with diverse and inclusive teams both in front of and behind the camera.
Recently, she received the Indigenous Screen Office's Solidarity Fund to write and develop two feature films. Her short film script "Waterfalls" won an Official Selection at the Best Film Awards. She was also nominated for By Black's People's Choice Award for Best Black Canadian Film Director and was chosen to participate in the Women In The Director's Chair Career Advancement Module in Vancouver. Additionally, the Toronto ACTRA Women's Committee (TAWC) selected Rainbow Baby, written by Kate Fenton and directed by Monica, for the 2020 Short Film Creation Lab. Monica also earned a Writers For Writers Diversity Initiative Award at the Toronto Screenwriting Conference.
She won CineFAM's Micro Cinema Challenge to write, produce, and direct the dramatic short film Weeping Willow, which screened internationally and garnered numerous accolades: Best Micro Cinema Short at the CineFAM Film Festival, Official Selections at Lift-Off Sessions Pinewood Studios UK, Toronto Black Film Festival, Legacy Film Showcase, Fern Film Festival, and was a finalist at The International Gullah Film Festival. This film, shot entirely on an iPhone 10x, amassed nearly 100 awards.
Other notable achievements include writing and starring in the comedic short God Squad, which earned her Best Actress at the Vancouver Short Film Festival, and writing and directing the comedic short The Standoff, which won the Audience Choice Award at Vino's Commercial Festival.
