Byron Hamel is a feature screenwriter who won the Academy Nicholl Fellowship for "Shade of the Grapefruit Tree".
Starting his career as a live stage comedian and musician, Byron was hired by CBC Radio, where he spent 12 years as an associate producer, comedy writer, and sound technician, working on local live shows like Labrador Morning, serving up comedy shorts and specials for national shows like DNTO, The Current, and Madly Off In All Directions.
After working in radio, Byron produced and directed three TV projects, for Bell TV and Bravo, including "If I Go Missing", a culturally influential film that earned him a coveted BravoFACT prize.
Byron has received mentorship under Star Trek royalty Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Time After Time), and a formal education in video game writing under Adrian Ropp (Hogwarts Legacy, Disney Infinity, Toy Story 3: The Video Game, Bolt).
He now writes feature screenplays and smaller contracts in Manitoba Canada.
