Born in Ohio and raised in Georgia, Jonathan "Big Jon" Gates was always interested in Theater and Music. He grew up with his Father and Mother playing guitar and Piano and being heavily involved in community theater. Throughout his school years he worked on his musicianship and acting abilities by being in multiple school plays and symphonic and marching bands. His main instrument was percussion although he desired strongly to play the Saxophone and Guitar. Jonathan also joined the International Thespian Society while in theater in High School. He took on a lead role his senior year in a musical "The Boyfriend" while also playing a big role in "12 Angry Men." Being into music, Jonathan also was involved in the choir programs during high school, including helping to start the Men's Ensemble with his older brother. He was also selected for All-State choir for his Junior and Senior year,
After high school, Jonathan moved with his family to Southern California where he Joined the Navy. Jonathan spent nearly 15 years serving his country and leaving music and acting on the back burner. Towards the end of his Navy career, Jonathan started to learn the guitar in order to aid in his desire to write music, and also to fulfill the dream of playing the guitar. After being separated from Active Duty in July of 2012, Jonathan finally decided to pursue his dreams...all of them!
Jonathan immediately went back to school full time with the goal of interning for a radio station. He has since then interned for a morning show and an afternoon show on two different radio stations, been a voice actor for a documentary titled "Bring Me Home" that has been selected to be screened at the Oceanside International Film Festival," been commissioned to write music for another documentary in the works, and has been identified as the "Voice of the Veteran" in San Diego for the Show Your Stripes campaign by Clear Channel Communications and iHeartradio.com pushing for the hiring of Veterans!
