Bob Hiltermann’s story is one of remarkable achievement. Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, as the tenth of eleven siblings, he became deaf at age four due to spinal meningitis. Unaware of his condition, his family mistakenly thought he was slow. When he was five, they moved to Canada, which further complicated communication. It wasn’t until he was ten that his family realized he was deaf. However, it was only at 18, upon attending Gallaudet University, that Bob learned sign language, transforming his life.
Growing up in a family of classical musicians, Bob developed a deep passion for music. He began playing drums at 16 and gravitated toward performance. He is renowned for his groundbreaking work in the award-winning sign language musical theater production "MUSIGN." Bob is the drummer for the internationally acclaimed all-deaf rock band "Beethoven’s Nightmare," which tours worldwide. In addition to drums, he plays percussion, harmonica, piano, and electric keyboard.
As an actor, Bob has appeared in numerous award-winning documentaries, television shows, soap operas, stage plays, and feature films. His credits include a year-long role on the soap "All My Children" and roles in films such as "Children of a Lesser God," "The Heart is a Drum Machine," and "The Hammer." He is one of four deaf performers featured in the acclaimed documentary "See What I’m Saying." Bob also stars in the educational sign language DVD series "Shut Up and Sign," which has attracted attention for a potential TV series adaptation.
