Mary Mara's television work includes recurring roles on "ER" and guest appearances on "Hope & Gloria," "NYPD Blue," and "Law & Order." She appeared in TV films such as "In the Blink of an Eye" on CBS and "Indictment." Her film credits feature "Mr. Saturday Night," "True Colors," "Blue Steel," "Just Looking," "Love Potion #9" alongside Sandra Bullock, and "The Hard Way" with Michael J. Fox. On stage, Mara performed in "Kindertransport," "Dream of a Common Language," and "Mad Forest" at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York. She also acted in a New York Shakespeare Festival production of "Twelfth Night" with Michelle Pfeiffer, Jeff Goldblum, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Additionally, she appeared with William Hurt in a Yale Repertory production of "Ivanov," directed by the head of the Moscow Arts Theater, who spoke no English. While attending San Francisco State University, Mara founded the Haight Ashbury Repertory Theatre (HART), where she developed her acting abilities. She later transferred to the Yale School of Drama, earning a master's degree in fine arts. A native of Syracuse, New York, Mara divided her time between homes in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
On June 26, 2022, Mary tragically drowned while swimming in the St. Lawrence River, a longtime favorite vacation destination.
