Born on July 10, 1972, in the small city of Formosa in northern Argentina, Massa grew up in a middle-class family. In 1990, he moved to Buenos Aires to study at the IDAC Instituto de Arte Cinematografico. At just 17, he shot his first film, Malevo (1990), at IDAC, earning the Best First Short Film award. In 1991, he began working as a second assistant director in the film industry while continuing his studies at IDAC.
In 1992, he created La terraza, a 30-minute 16mm action film that opened opportunities in advertising TV spot production. He worked on commercials for brands such as Veritas, Panavox, Great Films Themes, Dauhori, Zanella, Yamaha, Camod, and Puma.
His feature film debut came in 1994 with Más allá del límite (Beyond the Limit), which won Best First Feature Film at the 2º Luis Sandrini Film Festival in December 1994. In 1995, he moved to New York to attend advanced directing workshops at NYU and NYFA, where he produced The Last Duel (1997), a 35-minute tango drama, as his NYFA thesis. His 2001 feature Cacería, filmed in Argentina, won awards for Best Editing and Best Young Performance at a local festival and was released on April 4, 2002, in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.
In July 2002, he began pre-production on Día de los Muertos, a horror film in Argentina. Two projects, Tango Stories and Big Joe, were also slated for production in the USA by the end of 2002 and 2003.
