Matej is a film director and producer who made his debut in 2013 with Touchless, becoming the youngest European director at that time.
Since then, Matej has directed numerous TV series. In 2021, he won both the Czech Lion Academy Award and the Czech Critics Award for Rats, a unique portrayal of a young drug dealer and police informant.
He recently completed his second feature film, We Have Never Been Modern, which premiered in the Official Competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Europe and at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in the US. At the Riviera IFF, he received The Hollywood Reporter Award for Best Film and Best Director. The film draws inspiration from the true story of intersex individuals in the 1930s, just before the war devastated their lives. It earned 12 Czech Lion Award nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, and was released on Netflix across Central and Eastern Europe.
This year, Matej directed two major Czech series showcased at Berlinale Series and Canneseries: Daughter of the Nation for Canal+ and We're On It, Comrades! for Czech TV and ZDF Germany.
In addition to his film work, Matej is a commercial director and producer, overseeing Barletta, a production company that develops film and commercial projects. Barletta collaborates with global partners such as HBO MAX, Netflix, Canal+, AMC US, Goodfellas, Czech Television, Voyo, ZDF, and others.
