An English-born actor based in Melbourne, known for his work on stage and screen, as well as his contributions as a writer and librettist. Arriving in Australia in 1952, he graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1965 and later taught drama at Antioch College in Ohio and Flinders University in Adelaide. His acting career began in 1964 with a stage production of Doctor Faustus at Melbourne's Union Theatre. Eight years later, he joined the Australian Performing Group, an experimental collective at Carlton’s Pram Factory. Beyond acting, he adapted, wrote, and directed various plays.
Starting his screen career in 1974, he appeared in supporting roles in notable films and miniseries such as The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), Phar Lap (1983), The Big Steal (1990), Cash and Company (1975), and Against the Wind (1978). He co-starred as the father of Kate Winslet’s character in Jane Campion’s romantic comedy Holy Smoke (1999). His most recognized television role was Arthur West in the extensive family saga Power Without Glory (1976). Up until his retirement in 2014, he frequently guest-starred in popular Australian TV dramas and soap operas including Matlock Police (1971), Homicide (1964), Division 4 (1969), Cop Shop (1977), The Sullivans (1976), Carson's Law (1983), Prisoner (1979), Chances (1991), Stingers (1998), and Blue Heelers (1994).
In 2001, he published memoirs documenting the history of the Pram Factory.
