A songwriter known for "The Strawberry Roan" and "When the Bloom Is on the Sage," he was also a composer, author, singer, radio actor, writer, producer, and director. Educated in college and serving as an Army officer during World War I, he performed in musical comedies and tab shows, and directed and produced productions in Portland, Oregon; San Francisco; Oakland; Long Beach; San Diego; and Honolulu. He toured in vaudeville and was part of the radio and recording duo The Happie Chappies with Nat Vincent. Additionally, he wrote material for acts such as the original Beverly Hillbillies. For twelve years, he acted in the "Ma Perkins" radio series and appeared in numerous other radio programs. He also authored scripts for radio series including "Mystery Is My Hobby" and "Deadline," as well as for extras. After joining ASCAP in 1957, his primary musical collaborator was Nat Vincent. Other notable songs he composed include "Mellow Mountain Moon," "Little Girl Dressed in Blue," "At the End of the Lane," "Sitting on the Bank by the River," "It's Great to Love Someone Who Loves You Too," "My Pretty Quadroon," "Me and My Burro," "Old Black Mountain Trail," "My Dear Old Arizona Home," and "It's Time to Say Aloha.
