Jean Dulieu (real name Jan van Oort), (comic) artist, children's author, and violinist, began his career as a violinist with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam during World War II, but during the famine of 1944/1945, he invented Paulus the Woodgnome (Paulus de Boskabouter), who first appeared as the main character of a comic strip in newspaper Het Vrije Volk in 1946. After the war, Dulieu moved from Amsterdam to Terschelling, later to Soest, and finally to Arnhem. For decades, generations have enjoyed the stories of Paulus the Woodgnome and the surrounding characters (such as Oehoeboeroe the owl, Salomo the raven, and Eucalypta the witch) in many forms: comic strips, picture books with beautiful drawings and watercolors, radio plays (weekly on the radio from 1955 to 1964), and television series (especially the puppet series from the 1960s; Thijs Chanowski's "Fabeltjeskrant" version from the 1970s bore little resemblance to the original). Dulieu was a perfectionist and did almost everything himself, from writing, drawing, and painting to making puppets and sets and recording all the voices for the radio plays and puppet series (except for Princess Priegeltje, which was voiced by his daughter Dorinde). Today, his work is still lovingly brought to attention and published by Maarten de Meulder of Uitgeverij De Meulder in Assen, who specializes in Dulieu's oeuvre and manages the archive.
